Accessibility
Effective 9 October 2026. Last updated 9 October 2026.
Counted Thread aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. This statement says what that means on this page, how it is checked, and where the page still falls short.
What the page does
- The legend is a real table: symbol, DMC number, floss name, stitch count and the colour distance, ΔE, for every floss. The chart beside it carries a label giving its size in stitches and its number of flosses, and the tally above the legend says the same in words.
- Everything works from the keyboard. "Chart Your Photograph" opens your system's file chooser; the five settings are standard sliders, radio buttons and a checkbox; every file to save is a button. Dragging a photograph onto the page is a second way in, beside the button.
- Colour never works alone. Every floss has a symbol as well as a colour, drawn in dark or white ink chosen for contrast with the floss, on screen at full size and on every printed page. A floss given the next nearest match is marked in words in the legend.
- Text contrast is at least 4.5 to 1 against its background. Progress while a chart is made is written out as text, for example "Matching 12 of 24 colours to DMC floss", in a status line that screen readers announce.
- The chart draws itself row by row over half a second. If your system asks for reduced motion, it appears in one paint.
How it is checked
Each release is checked against the live page with automated tools for contrast, landmarks, labels, keyboard reach and touch-target size at phone, tablet and desktop widths, and the results are recorded in the build's delivery notes in the source repository. Automated checks catch some problems and miss others, which is why the contact line below exists.
Known limits
- A counted chart is a picture made to be read by eye. A screen reader reads its label, the tally and the legend table; it cannot read the stitches one by one.
- On a phone the symbols are too small to draw inside the fitted chart. "Show Every Symbol" draws the chart at full size, and every printed page carries them.
- The page has not been tested by people using assistive technology. If something does not work for you, we want to know.
